About our hard chine boat designs

Waters Dancing is happy to announce the introduction of a hard-chine kayak to our line of sea/touring kayaks. The Anuri 16 (pronounced anneree) is a beautiful hard-chine boat with some striking improvements over other hard-chine kayaks.  We have incorporated the positive qualities of a multi-chine kayak into the Anuri so it gets the benefits of both designs.

One way we have achieved this is by inserting a small flat panel (keel) into the bottom centerline of the hull.  In addition we gave this keel a slight rocker.  The rocker shape and the increased volume of the hull makes the Anuri more maneuverable and stable than other hard-chine boats. The keel also reduces the width of the bottom panels.  This means greater hull strength because there is less flex in the wood.

We wanted the Anuri to track better than other hard-chine kayaks so we gave her a slightly fish form chine line.  Much like a fish when it stops swimming the Anuri continues to coast straight when you stop paddling.  The sheer (deck to hull joint) is swede form, thus allowing you to more easily take a vertical power (paddle) stroke.

As you can see from the pictures we have achieved a softer transition between panels, at the bow and the stern, than other hard-chine kayaks.  We have achieved this by raising the chine line towards the bow and stern, which also gives you better strength and a very clean shape.  All of the above features make the Anuri’s entry and exit smooth like that of a finely tuned multi-chine hull.

The cockpit of this boat has plenty of room and the large hatches hold loads of gear.  Note that the rear of the cockpit is low for those paddlers who enjoy practicing their rolls.  Yet the deck rises quickly to give you more carrying capacity than other hard chine v-bottom kayaks.  Also, a hard chine boat often has more storage space than a more rounded hull of the same size.

The Anuri 16 tracks perfectly, paddles great and easily performs nimble turns.  She’s as fast as the wind so we named her Anuri, the Inuit word for wind.  Whether you’re a novice or an experienced paddler you will feel at home in the cockpit of this beautiful craft.
